How to Inspect the Drivetrain in a Dodge Ram
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately EasyThings You’ll Need:
- Creeper
- Old rags
Perform the drivetrain inspection every 12 months or 15,000 miles to catch problems during the three-year, 36,000-mile drivetrain warranty that comes with the Dodge Ram. Continue these inspections at the appropriate interval after the warranty expires to ensure safe driving in your Ram.
Step2
Test drive your Dodge Ram, listening closely for any unusual noises such as a clicking or clunking when you're cruising at a low speed, a clicking noise when you turn or clunks when you round a corner. Any of these noises could indicate trouble with the drivetrain or low grease in the bearings unit.
Step3
Park and raise the hood on the truck to check the oil and transmission fluid levels. Both have labeled metal sticks that you pull out and both dipsticks on the Ram are on the driver's side of the engine block.
Step4
Wipe each of the dipsticks with an old rag and reinsert them into their respective holes to get a reading. Check the transmission with the truck running and then turn the truck off to check the oil. The truck should be at normal operating temperature, however, before checking either one. Add more fluid, if either falls below the full mark.
Step5
Inspect the truck's drivetrain visually. Roll under the truck on a creeper and look for any signs of breakage or wear on the axles that connect the driveshaft to the wheels. Examine the front and rear drive axles, CV-joints and transfer case.
Step6
Look for seepage of fluids from the joints and seals. Pay attention for dry rot or cracking in any of the hard plastics that make up the boot covering of the axles.
Step7
Slide out and check all the hoses and clamps attached to the air and oil filters and coming our of the engine. You warranty doesn't cover these items and it could create bigger problems, if they're allowed to break.
